You can make a real difference and help Basingstoke and Deane to get greener right from your own garden.
Help our hedgehogs
Sometimes known as the “gardener’s friend”, hedgehogs can help keep plants and vegetables intact by eating critters like slugs. But numbers are low. You can help in your garden by creating a small gap in your fence to make a “hedgehog highway” (ask your neighbour first!), putting out wide, shallow bowls of water and letting a corner go wild with plants so they have somewhere to nest.
Grow a nature area
Plant native trees and plants to remove carbon from the air and create a home for bees, hedgehogs and butterflies. And if you fancy making a bigger impact, you can get involved as local groups help nature areas spring up across the borough.
Don’t miss a beet with your own vegetable patch
With around 12% of food emissions coming from transporting it, growing vegetables at home can hugely cut your footprint… and your food bill.
Composting is heaps of fun
Unlike food in your black bin, food in a compost bin gets more oxygen and so it decomposes differently and releases around seven times fewer emissions. And it also gives you a free supply of compost to keep your garden blooming year after year.
Get wise with water
Making tap water takes energy, and energy means emissions. A water butt catches rainwater (which isn’t uncommon here) to use for free in your garden. And having less water going into your home’s drains saves you money there, too.
Are we missing anything?
