Three steps for how you can help our wildlife by monitoring how well they’re doing.

To protect nature, we need to understand it – and that starts with knowing what’s out there. Species recording helps conservationists and scientists to know which ones are thriving, which are in trouble and where support is needed most.
You don’t need to be an expert to get involved and make a difference. Just follow these three steps:

Top tips for recording species
High-quality records are important. Here’s how to make sure yours are top notch.
- Give the exact time and date you saw the species
- Be specific about location – street and site names and latitude and longitude references are really useful.
- Note whether you saw the species, or if someone else did (please include your full name, if you can)
- Give as much detail as you can – but don’t guess. If you spot a butterfly but you’re not sure what kind, don’t worry about submitting a record for it.
- Include a photo, if possible
