A case study by the Basingstoke and Deane Green Team
Thanks to our help, Judy’s set to save hundreds on her energy bills every year with the new solar panels, radiators, heat pump and water tank she had installed for free in her semi-detached home in Upton Grey.
After being visited by a heating systems installer, who thought Judy may be able to get a grant that would pay for energy-saving improvements, she spoke to the borough councillor for her area – and they suggested she get in touch with us for free support.
We went to Judy’s home to explain the process and answer any questions she had before she went ahead. And now the home improvements are done, she was keen to share her experience!
Why did Judy decide to get a heat pump and solar panels?
Judy said: “I didn’t really decide to! A young man came and visited me at the doorstep. We chatted in the garden and I didn’t really understand much of what he was talking about, but he thought that I fit the category of people that could get a grant.
“After he left, I thought it over and discussed it with friends and family over the next few weeks… I was a bit worried when the installer said he would need financial details from me! So I called one of my local councillors, who suggested I speak to you. I also did some research to see if the installer was genuine.
“I felt more confident after talking to you and being told the grant and installer were genuine. After that, and given it wasn’t going to cost me anything, I decided to go for it!”

Who paid for the works?
Judy said: “They were fully funded by the grant! I didn’t pay a penny.”
How was the process?
Judy said: “The works themselves took around three weeks in total. But most of that time was due to pauses in the work as the weather was poor!
“The installers were good at tidying up after themselves, competent and good company, and I was very impressed. Some of the pipes were replaced as well as all the radiators, so they had to take up some of the floor, and there was a lot of coming and going through the house. I would recommend that anyone else who goes for it gets it done in late spring or summer, rather than just after New Year’s, as the doors were open a lot!”
How does Judy’s new heat pump compare to her old boiler?
Judy said: “I’m delighted with the whole thing – it’s a completely different set-up!
“My old boiler was fed by gas canisters and was very expensive; I was never sure when they were going to run out. The heat pump is a delight. I had some problems to start with, but now I have a number for the manufacturers, who got it sorted for me. I can get in touch with them for help if I need to.”

And what about the solar panels?
Judy said: “What a clever idea to be creating my own energy! I have already had some money back from the solar panels. They’re almost too good to be true!”
Finally… was there anything she wishes she’d known before?
Judy said: “How big and bright white the heat pump is!
“But I’m used to it now. And the noise of the fan is not intrusive – even the neighbours were surprised it was so unobtrusive as it is.
There’s nothing I’m not happy about. Having a level temperature in winter is brilliant. It’s the most generous gift I’ve ever had in my life.”
