Basingstoke Green Week 2025

Celebrating community action on climate change from Saturday 7 June to Sunday 15 June.

A week of events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy took place from Saturday 7 June to Sunday 15 June as Basingstoke Green Week returned to the borough again in summer 2025.

Organised by communities with the help of the borough council, the festivities were part of the yearly week-long celebration of local action to tackle climate change and nurture nature.

Saturday 7 June – on the Green Week stage outside M&S in Festival Place, Basingstoke town centre (11am to 3.15pm)

11am to 11.30am – Tree-tastic with Junk Jodie

Join Junk Jodie and Jenny on a journey through the Amazon rainforest. Learn how we can protect the trees and the animals’ homes, as well as the benefits that the trees and the Amazon rainforest provide for the planet. This interactive storytelling show includes songs and dancing and is designed to inspire you to create toys from junk and bring them to life with your imagination.

25-minute show followed by five-minute craft activity

11.30am to 12 noon – ‘The Magic of Recycling’ with Becky the Bin-tastic Magician

Join Becky the Bin-tastic Magician for a fun-filled, earth-saving adventure packed with dazzling tricks, silly laughs, and interactive fun that teaches kids how to reuse, recycle and reduce waste. Watch as trash turns into treasure, rubbish disappears, and magic grows right before your eyes.  It’s the perfect mix of fun and learning! Don’t miss this magical, family-friendly show.  Bring your curiosity, your smile, and your love for the Earth!

12 noon to 12.30pm – Eco-themed music from Apple of My Eye

“The uproarious troubadours of the modern British folk scene.” Hailing from Bristol and London, Apple of my Eye is a raucous and heartfelt folk band known for its rich vocal harmonies, soaring strings and foot-stomping rhythms. Drawing on British and European folk traditions, its songs blend gorgeous melody with myth, mischief and masterful storytelling — by turns tender, absurd and euphoric. Whether on a festival stage or in a candlelit pub, the band conjures an atmosphere of warmth, wit and wonder that leaves audiences singing long after the last note.

3pm to 3.15pm – House of Ra’s recycled fashion show

House of Ra is a small sustainable fashion brand created to keep textiles out of landfills by re-inventing, upcycling and creating new from old. Inspiring a mindful approach to waste, House of Ra has created a range of sustainable, handmade collections from pre-loved clothes, fabric scraps, ethically sourced vintage fabrics and recycling.

Saturday 7 June – Green market in The Malls, Basingstoke town centre (9am to 5.30pm)

Head over to the green market in The Malls, where you’ll be able to talk to our Green Team about making your home more energy efficient to save money and cut carbon, find out about the plants and wildlife that make the borough their home, learn about renewable zero-emission energy and get inspired to take planet-friendly action.

This includes diving into the world of nature by visiting the ‘Natural Basingstoke Wildlife Garden’, where you will find lots of ideas for helping nature at home and in your community. There will be family friendly activities, like nature crafts, and displays on everything from how to build a garden pond to planting for wildlife.

You’ll even be able to buy honey from local beekeepers and wildlife-friendly products like bug hotels and bird and bat boxes from a local men’s shed.

And volunteers from Greener Basingstoke, a local community group, will also be there to tell you more about how you can make a difference in the fight against climate change.

Saturday 7 June – other activities taking place

Activities for all ages about how to save money and the planet

From 12.30pm to 2pm in the Discovery Centre in Festival Place, Basingstoke town centre

Fun sessions for kids and adults all about how to save money and the planet by wasting less stuff. The activities are led by a waste prevention champion from the county council.

Get items fixed for free at a repair cafe

Hatch Warren Repair Cafe – from 10.30am to 1pm at Hatch Warren Community Centre, Basingstoke RG22 4XF

St Mary Bourne Repair Cafe – from 10am to 12 noon at George Inn Pub, St Mary Bourne

Overton Repair Cafe – from 10am to 12 noon at The Community Centre, Overton

Whether you have a torn jacket, a faulty toaster, a wobbly chair or another broken item, the skilled volunteers at these repair cafes could help you fix it instead of binning it.

Monday 9 June

Upholstery and sewing workshop with The Community Furniture Project

‘How to green your finance’ talk by Greener Basingstoke

From 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Microsoft Teams

An online presentation, followed by questions and answers, with Rowan from Greener Basingstoke.

Explore the power money has and how it can be harnessed to either harm or help the planet and its people. Rowan will touch on what the current issues are and what impact investing is, ethical banking and what steps you can take to boost your climate change actions.

Chat sustainability at a People, Planet, Pint meet up

This free, relaxed and informal event is a chance for those interested in sustainability in all its forms to meet and have a chat over a drink.

Whether you’re a sustainability professional, small business owner, local council/government worker, student, consultant, looking to switch careers, or anything else besides, come down and meet others interested in sustainability.

Down Grange butterfly survey walk

Thursday 12 June

Learn how to repair and upcycle furniture with The Community Furniture Project

Forest school outdoor cooking class with Inspero

Hosted during Basingstoke’s Green Week at the Inspero community charity garden, this hands-on event teaches children to cook using fresh, local ingredients, all under the guidance of chefs.

It’s a fun, educational experience that will boost confidence, foster teamwork and teach children essential nutrition and kitchen skills.

Friday 13 June

Visit Inspero’s community garden

10.30am to 1.30pm at Kempshott Village Hall, Basingstoke RG22 5HN

Come and take a walk around Inspero’s beautiful, RHS award-winning charity community garden. Meet and chat to staff and volunteers over a cup of tea or coffee and cake.
Sow some seeds or take a cutting of a beautiful plant to take home.

Saturday 14 June

First day of Overton Green Weekend (Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June)

Head over to Overton to get involved in Sustainable Overton’s Green Weekend with a clothes swap, live performances, rock painting and more.

Dawn chorus bird walk hosted by Wilder Bramley in collaboration with the RSPB

From 5am at Clift Meadow Car Park, Minchens Lane, Bramley RG26 5BH

Head to Frith Woods in Bramley, which is an ancient woodland area, to hear the woodland birds waking up and then walk across some of the fields to hear the later morning birds.
The walk will be led by the RSPB local group leader Peter Hutchins, an experienced local birder, who has been volunteering with the RSPB for over 40 years.
After the walk, head to The Barns cafe in Bramley at 8am for breakfast for those who wish to join.
Bring: walking shoes (as ground may be uneven in places), something warm as it will be early morning, sunglasses, hat, umbrella, water/coffee/snacks.

Sunday 15 June

Second day of Overton Green Weekend (Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June)

Head over to Overton to get involved in Sustainable Overton’s Green Weekend with a clothes swap, live performances, rock painting and more.

Go on a free guided tour of a local orchard

12 noon to 4.30pm at Northdown Orchard, South Litchfield RG25 3PB

A chance to go on a free guided tour of Northdown Orchard, a small 12-acre organic family farm that grows and harvests a wide range of salads, herbs and vegetables all year round in its fields and greenhouses. There’ll even be a children’s vegetable hunt with plant prizes to take home.

Go bug hunting at Down Grange Meadow

10am to 12.30pm at Down Grange Meadow

Kids (and their families) are invited to join conservation volunteers from the Kempshott Conservation Group on a bug hunt at Down Grange Meadow.

Throughout the week

Find out if you could get your items repaired for free

11am to 2pm each day from Monday 9 June to Friday 13 June in a to-be-confirmed unit upstairs in Festival Place, Basingstoke town centre

If you would love to find out if an item you own could be brought back to its former glory, then pop into the Makerspace Repair Cafe in Festival Place (unit to be confirmed).

The team will discuss your items with you and whether they think they could fix them. They can also let you know about public events they’ve got coming up and if they can help you with any projects you’re working on.

Free bike health check at Halfords, Basingstoke RG22 6HL

Pop in for a quick bike safety check for your peace of mind. The team will look to see whether your bike is safe and road worthy and give you a no-obligation quote for repairs and servicing.
The bike check will be carried out by an expert technician, and may take up to 30 minutes. If repairs are needed, they may not take place on the same day.
